Garden Club of Austin Scholarship Application Due 3/30:

For an application to be considered, the scholarship committee must receive the following by Monday, March 30, 2015:

l.  A completed Scholarship Application Form sent by the applicant.

2. Three letters of recommendation, sent directly by the persons writing the letters.  One of these letters should come from a high school counselor (if the applicant has been enrolled in high school within the last two years and has not attended a college) or a departmental adviser (if the applicant is enrolled in a college or university).  Preferably, at least one of the letters should come from an instructor who has taught the applicant within the last three years.  Additional letters are acceptable.

3. An official high school transcript, or college transcript(s) if the applicant has completed one or more semesters (terms) in any college.  The transcript should be sent directly by the school to the address listed below, but the student may send it, provided the transcript is properly sealed by the transcript office.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.  Application Form must be filled out completely.

Native Plant Society of Texas offers Scholarships, Research Grants:

First is a new $1000 scholarship, the Kate Hillhouse Undergraduate Scholarship, offered to junior and senior level undergraduates majoring in biology, botany, horticulture, landscape design, or related fields with an emphasis on Texas native plants or the ecosystems of Texas native plants. One scholarship is awarded annually.

 

Second is the Anne Miller Gonzales Graduate Research Grant of up to $2000 for graduate students conducting academic research related to Texas native plants and/or to the conservation and restoration of native-plant habitats in Texas. One grant is awarded annually.

SUMMER COLLEGE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

INTRODUCTION

The Berkshire Botanical Garden is a not-for-profit public garden established in 1934.  Located on 15 rural acres, the Garden consists of 22 display gardens, a woodland preserve, several specialty collections and three greenhouses.  The Garden is situated in the beautiful Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts, two miles from the center of historic Stockbridge.  The area is home to many cultural institutions and numerous natural sites. 

DESCRIPTION

The college internship program is designed to offer hands-on experience at a botanical garden for persons aspiring to a career in horticulture, public gardening and landscape architecture or design.  Interns work with horticulture staff and volunteers in all phases of public garden maintenance and development.  This includes planting, weeding, watering, mulching, pruning, and interacting with visitors.  Students may also become involved in special projects such as accession records, garden inventories, plant signage, or flower arranging. Intern training sessions, public educational programs, and staff field trips are offered to help broaden the students' horticultural horizon.

Summer internships are 12 weeks, 40 hours per week.  The Internships usually start mid to end of May. The program includes housing and a stipend of $7.50/hr.

REQUIREMENTS

Previous gardening experience and course work in horticulture, public gardening or landscape design are required.  Junior and senior undergraduate students applying for college credit are preferred.  Students must be responsible, self-motivated and capable of the strenuous nature of gardening. ALEXANDRIA, VA – Jan. 16, 2015 – Internships are the best way for students to gain valuable hands-on experience to help their studies and future career. The American Floral Endowment (AFE) funds internships for floriculture and environmental horticulture students each year, and the deadline is fast approaching!

AFE is now accepting applications for the Vic & Margaret Ball Intern Scholarship Program and the Mosmiller Intern Scholarship program. The deadline for online applications is March 1. Click here for internship information.
The Vic & Margaret Ball Intern Scholarship Program was made possible through a generous gift from Vic & Margaret Ball and provides students with an opportunity to gain experience in commercial production. The Ball Intern Scholarship Program offers paid internships in three, four or six month durations and provides scholarships of up to $6,000. Watch Kaylee South, a previous Vic & Margaret Ball internship recipient, discuss her experience at the Sun Valley Floral Group in Arcata, CA.

Honoring the late Colonel and Mrs. Walter E. Mosmiller, Jr., the Mosmiller Intern Scholarship Program provides students pursuing a career in retail or wholesale operations an opportunity to gain internship experience. The Mosmiller Intern Scholarship program offers paid internships in 10-14 week durations and provides scholarships of $2,000.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Any student who is a U.S. citizen and currently enrolled in a floriculture/environmental horticulture program at a two or four year college or university in the United States
• Any student maintaining a “C” or better GPA
• Internship must be completed prior to graduation.
